I recently got around to watching the blockbuster movie American Hustle and was mesmerized. The storyline and plot were of course really good, but it was the HAIR & MAKEUP donned by Golden Globe winner Amy Adams, that made me wish I was living back in the 1970’s! Although I was born in 1978, I couldn’t exactly work theses makeup looks just yet…Darn.
Larger than life glasses like these affordable Urban Outfitters ones,
are a MUST HAVE to complete the look! (mine are verrrry old Old Navy ones!)
Recreating this look means channeling a MAJOR GLAM MODE consisting of :
1. shimmery smokey eyes (that resemble disco balls),
2. strong cheeks,
3. major lips,
4. and of course big hair.
Here’s how I took the basics of these looks and made them wearable for the now!

For the EYES I kept with shades of brown for a more wearable look, but made sure to exaggerate the eyeliner underneath the eyes and towards the outside of the eyes to get that super rimmed look of the 70’s! I did this by using my Urban Decay liner (that has a bit of shimmer in it already) and then adding additional shimmer eyeshadow from the palette used (I specifically used the color “dark horse”) all over the eyeliner to make it super smokey. And LOTS of mascara on those top and bottom lashes is a must have.
The CHEEKS were more “striped” towards the top of the ear than I’m used to. I typically just place blush right on the apples of the cheeks but this needed to be a bit more harsh and obvious, so it starts in the center of the cheek and goes all the way towards my hairline! (The blush looks a bit more pink in these photos than the actual color I used but I think that’s bc it had an older pink still on the brush from the other day!!) I used the apricot shade to get that warmness that tends towards bronzy looking to create bold cheekbones like Amy Adams rocks in the movie. And adding a highlighter right on top of the blush color makes it pop and continues with that shimmery disco feel!
LIPS are also feeling the vibe with the MAC orange based coppery red lipstick I used. The lips throughout the movie were always bold and colorful and lots of reds and red oranges were seen to compliment the apricot cheeks.
I didn’t go so far as to create spiral curls in my HAIR like Amy above, but I did go for soft big vertical curls with my 1.5 inch curling iron! I might have teased just a bit at the crown:) If you payed close attention, I switched my gold hoop earrings for more dangley drop earrings that felt much more glam halfway through shooting these pics!
