It is possible to pull off red lips with red clothes.
Today I am sharing not only how my favorite romper I wore while in Miami for Swim Week worked with a matching red lip, but also my experience at the lovely Sonesta Coconut Grove Hotel. More photos and hotel details about our stay there at the bottom of this post.
In the past, I have kind of been against the idea of matching your lip color to the outfit you are wearing. Not really sure why…I’m sure I read it in a magazine or saw it on E! Fashion Police or something as what NOT to wear. But once I took a chance with this look, I decided that rule was out the door!! I feel like this fire engine red lip really works with my red romper.
Here’s why I’m okay with matching your red outfit to your red lips and what to remember the next time you decide to do the matchy matchy thing with your makeup look and clothes…
My thoughts behind matching lips to clothing :
- Consider the color of the outfit you’re wearing. My romper is a deep classic red, so matching it with pretty much the exact same shade of my fire engine red in my lipstick, MAC Retro Matte in “Fashion Legacy,” doesn’t overpower the look. It’s much easier to pull off matchy-matchy in classic hues like the traditional red lip, rather than matching a vibrant purple or electric pink clothing with the same lip. Probably would be too obvious which would make it much more noticeable and in some cases, not in a good way. Oh, and if it’s a bold lip color, choose a matte finish, looks much more sophisticated than a glossy red.
- Is your outfit red from head to toe? Say like a long sleeved shirt with long skirt or pants? If so, matching your lips with the same red would probably be overkill. With this Band of Gypsies romper here, it’s got open shoulder, shorts, and has a slight print in it to break things up, so I’m good. (I’m wearing a small for reference in size)
- Do you want your look more casual or dressed up? I find rompers to be pretty casual most of the time, so when I add a red lip, it immediate dresses my look up more than if I had stuck with a nude lip. Also I added these lace up snakeskin wedges instead of flats which also kicked up the fun factor a bit! (They’re currently on sale for only $46!)
- Most importantly – Consider what YOU like and YOUR personality. Do you WANT to match your mouth to your outfit, is that what makes you happy? If so, and it’s a total comfort and confidence thing, then by golly DO IT!! Who really cares what other people think anyway!! Like I always say, makeup is fun and can show creativity and emotion, so do what makes you feel beautiful.
So a little bit about the Sonesta Coconut Grove hotel we had the pleasure of staying in.
It’s located about 15 minutes from the South Beach area, which is where most of our Swim Week events were happening. An uber can get you down there in no time, except for when it’s Swim Week – ha! Traffic is bad everywhere! But honestly I was glad we stayed a bit further out from the hustle and bustle of South Beach because this area of town was much more relaxing to be in!
The hotel has 196 rooms so I guess you could consider it more of a boutique-type hotel and not some monster of a hotel where you don’t feel special. We have all stayed at those huge big chains, you know which ones I’m talking about, wink wink. The staff here was beyond helpful and accommodating. People make a huge difference in a hotel experience, and the Sonesta staff made it a joy to come back to after each tiring event down in South Beach.
The two queen bedroom we slept in was very spacious with a mini fridge, mini stovetop, and microwave. Which was great because we were able to save leftover pizza from one night and eat it for breakfast the next morning – haha! The beds are out of control comfy and I wish I could have packed up the pillows and taken them home with me. Like sleeping on a cloud, seriously.
Speaking of food, their in house restaurant, Panorama, was where we ate our first lunch upon arriving and it looks out over the sailboats and water, and the food was just as phenomenal as the view.
I had a grilled shrimp Caeasar salad that was to die for. Luckily we were able to get back up to Panorama the same evening to meet with a few ladies from the management team and PR staff to enjoy some specialties from the chef around dinnertime before we headed back into South Beach for shows.
Y’all, I ate my first ever ceviche and tuna tartare, and let me tell you, I was blown away by the freshness and how much I actually enjoyed it!! I have no idea what flavorful surprises the chef put in that appetizer, but I can now say I like both of these fish plates, and I am not much of a fish person, unless it is fried! But hold on, my absolute fave dish, was the steak on the plantain (pic above). Please can I eat this all day long.
And lets not forget the Electric Lemonade the bartender made me to go along with our appies. No I failed to take a pic because I drank it too fast because it was that tasty!! So if you can tell, you won’t go hungry at the Sonesta because you have the Panorama an elevator ride away.
Overall our experience was a 5 star out of 5. Now that I have been introduced to this hotel group, I will absolutely be looking out for more of their locations whenever I plan a trip somewhere.
