Kitchen DIY beauty products.
It’s amazing how many ingredients you have right in your pantry, spice rack, or refrigerator that can be combined to create your own (and cheap!) natural makeup or fix a beauty product! It’s fun to see what you can whip up in the kitchen. Vivian especially loves to join me when I make my own teeth whitener paste and sugar lip scrub:)
Think back to Egyptian times when the women had to make their own cheek stains from red ochre (naturally colored clay) that was mined and washed then dried in the sun to achieve the red pigment. Or their mascara made from kohl (black) and malachite (green) used as eyeliner.
So of course we don’t have to go that old school, but there are some easy modern day beauty hacks and recipes for your skin and makeup for todays woman! Here are some of my favorites that I have actually tried and succeeded at (#1, 2, & 3), and a couple that I am going to DIY very soon (#4, & 5)!
1. Quick & Easy Teeth Whitener : Take 1/4 cup baking soda + half of a lemon wedge and squeeze it into the soda then mix in a small cup with a spoon until it makes a very thick paste. Brush the paste onto your teeth with a toothbrush for less than one minute then rinse off with water. Your teeth will be a shade whiter than when you started. Much cheaper than white strips or going to the dentist for whitening trays! (tip – I have used the squirt lemon juice which works okay, but the real lemon wedge is more effective).
2. Simple Lip Exfoliator : You don’t need expensive department store lip scrubs to get silky smooth lips. Just go to your pantry or grocery store! Take plain white sugar and crush it up as fine as possible in a ziplock bag. Then dump the finely crushed sugar into a few tablespoons of organic coconut oil or olive oil and mix until it becomes pasty. Rub onto your lips morning and night and you’ll have silky smooth and hydrated lips within days. You can small batches of this in old baby food jars and leave it in my bathroom so I remember to use after brushing my teeth.
3. Fix Shattered Eyeshadow & Blush : This is an amazing hack!! Just because you dropped your favorite shadow or blush on the ground and shattered it into a million pieces, doesn’t mean it belongs in the trash. Save those powdered items with these simple steps.
What you need : spatula/or spoon, paper towels, ziplock bag, rubbing alcohol, a coin (cleaned!) the size of your makeup pan, and a cloth. Step 1 : place shattered product in ziplock bag and crush pieces with your spoon until you have an even consistency. Step 2 : Pour almost a capful of rubbing alcohol into the pan of powder and mix enough to create a paste with the shattered pigment. Gradually add more alcohol as needed. Step 3 : As if smoothing a sheet of brownie batter, spread the product using your spoon to make it flat and even. Step 4 : Grab a small piece of scrap fabric—an old shirt or pair of jeans is fine—and place over the pan. Press a coin (or bottom of a small cup if it’s a large pan) down hard over the fabric for 10 to 15 seconds. Remove the fabric. Step 5 : Allow at least a couple of hours to dry, then voila! Just like new, almost:)
4. Antioxidant Facial Toner : (From RealSimple.com) I love love facial sprays – the hydrating kind and the setting spray kind. As long as they smell good and feel soothing! So I found this daily, hydrating spray DIY that says once it’s made can be stored in the refrigerator. A cooling spray for this summer – tell me more!
Recipe:
3 cups water
Peel of 1 citrus fruit
Other add-ins that you can simmer with citrus peel:
1.5 cups rooibos tea/herb (it’s got anti-aging properties among many other benefits) OR 1.5 cups green, white, or black tea
Simmer the peel in distilled water for 15-30 minutes. Then strain the water, discard the peel, and put the solution in a spray bottle. Spray on your face daily. No need to rinse off.
5. Natural Cheek & Lip Stains from The IndianSpot.com
