National Lipstick Day is being celebrated today, July 29th, 2020. I know I know, one of those weird, gimmicky, made up holidays, but you know what, I’m here for it. Because life is so heavy right now, but lipstick chatter is NOT heavy, so any distraction is welcomed!
I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize that our poor lipsticks + gloss stashes probably aren’t getting the love they deserve due to all of the mask wearing we’ve been doing due to this Pandemic situation. Ugh.
Buuut I am an optimist, and I believe that this mask wearing won’t last forever, and our lips + smiles will be back front and center eventually! And if you have been following me around for any length of time, you know nothing is going to stop me from swiping on a lipstick to make me feel better about myself and keep with my normal beauty routine. Whether anybody can see it or not!
So let’s celebrate our pouts with a few of my fave lipstick hacks PLUS a few crazy good sales going on with our colored bullet friends and brands I’ll share at the bottom of this post. (so feel free to go ahead and scroll down to look at those first since these sales are gone after today).

Lip Prep. Flakey lips are no bueno and can ruin the look of your lipstick. So how should you keep bare lips looking their best? EYE CREAM. Yes, I said eye cream for your lips. I read about this tip years ago that Sir John (who is Beyonce’s makeup artist!) said eye cream trumps a waxy lip balm because balms change the texture of lipstick and eye cream stops the pigment from sinking into lip lines! I exfoliate mine and my clients lips with a throwaway mascara wand (I buy these in bulk as a MUA anyway) and eye cream to really keep them silky smooth. This Cerave eye cream contains hyaluronic acid which is also a skin plumper for your eyes + lips! Win Win.
Make It Last. It’s all about layering when it comes to making your lipstick last. After you’ve made sure your lips are smooth (see previous tip #1) then use a lip liner to completely line your lips and then color them in completely with that same liner. Add your matching or similar shade of lipstick, then blot excess with a tissue or an oil blotter sheet. Reapply another thin layer of lipstick. Then take apart a tissue using the thin piece placed over your lips, then pat a bit of translucent powder onto the top to lock it in. Two of the best longwear lip liners I’ve tried are this drugstore priced one and this popular prestige one.
How To Pick Your Most Flattering Lipstick Color For Your Skin Tone. Okay, this is a popular question I often get. I’m going to try and make this as simple as possible without getting too long winded. It has to do with your skins undertones first and foremost. Not to be confused by your skin tone, meaning you’re pale or dark skinned. Dark skin can have cool undertones and very fair gals can have warm undertones!
- If you are COOL TONED – this means you’ve got blue-ish, pink or red hues to your skin and veins. Plus your skin probably tends to burn in the sun before tanning. You might also find that silver jewelry flatters you the most. Your best bet is lipsticks with blue or purple undertones. Your reds should sway towards cherry red, not orange red. For nudes, you want ones with a rosey or pink undertone.
- If you are WARM TONED – this means you’ve got yellow or olive hues to your skin. Your veins in your wrists might run more on the green side and gold jewelry flatters you the most. You want lipsticks that go warmer like bold oranges or coral, brick reds, and earthy nudes.
- If you are a NEUTRAL TONED gal – this means you are mixture of yellows and pinks within your skin. And you look great in golds and silver jewelry! Lucky you, you have a wide range of lip colors to play with from pink based nudes, to mauves, and true reds (not blue based or orange based) and berry shades for darker skin.
Here’s the final takeaway after reading all of this. Sure, the general rules of thumb for choosing your correct lipstick colors are listed above. BUT. If you’re a cool undertone who feels ah-mazing in a bold orange based coral lip – go for it and break the “rules” and you do YOU!
