I have learned after many years of doing makeup, especially on brides, whose first question is, “Will it STAY??” that you have got to have the right combo of products. I wore this bold blue eye makeup look to a recent advisory board meeting for Macy’s that I am on and I applied it very early in the a.m. before I left Athens for Atlanta! And with it being such a bright color, I of course didn’t want it running down my face as the day went on.
This is a very popular topic amongst a lot of my clients on how to get truly good longevity out of your eye makeup so I thought I’d share the combo that works for me.

- EYELID PRIMER – MAC Prep & Prime 24HR Extend Eye Base – You have to create a base to give any shadow something to stick to. This proud should be applied to a clean lid, all over from brows to lash line, and let it dry at least 45 seconds to a minute before applying your eyeshadow. This colorless, oil free, MAC one is seriously one of the best I have ever used and can be used on any skintone. You only need a teeny tiny bit for it to work wonders.
- WATERPROOF EYELINER – NYX Stay On Glide On Stay On Waterproof Liner “Sunrise Blue” – I like to apply an eyeliner then layer an eyeshadow on top to blur the liner and make it softer but also to SET the liner. A “waterproof” liner is a no brainer when it comes to longevity because it lasts through sweaty lids and fading. This NYX formula is one of my faves and is soft enough that it glides on and doesn’t tug on delicate lids but gives bold color.
- LONG WEAR EYESHADOW – L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow (the Midnight Blue I used for this look is hard to find, but I found it on Amazon here) – a truly long wear eye shadow is hard to find but this specific drugstore formula is one of my favorites and has greeaaaat staying power! It can also be used wet for major color impact! If you find a shadow labeled long wear it can also be used as an eyeliner when you use an thin tipped eyeliner brush so you could skip the liner step and just use your shadow.
- MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY – Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray – It’s basically hairspray for your face and makeup. Yes you spray this wet formula all over your face in an X motion. This one from Urban Decay is a staple in my makeup kit because it smells lovely and feels amazing on the skin with a cooling after effect. Which is basically what a setting spray does – it cools down the temperature of your makeup which helps it to lock and load.

This is the outfit I wore with my blue shadow look in case you were interested. Yes, the blue palm print inspired my eyeshadow color palette for the day! I have a thing for matching my makeup to my outfits.

It’s got the cutest split sleeves and open back (which I failed to photograph!) and is so perfect for the hot summer months to come.
