How to apply eyeliner is a pretty broad topic. There are so many options, techniques, formulas and products out there, what is a gal to do or choose??
I don’t wear eyeliner every single day like I do mascara or filling in my brows but when I don’t wear it, inevitably one of my children asks me if I’m sick. Not kidding. I will admit, liner does add some life to the eyes!
As you can see from the top pictures, I am going to show you 4 different ways you could wear eyeliner using 4 products : A black kohl eye pencil, black liquid liner, angled liner brush, and a white eyeliner.
From the most simple approach of only wearing liner in the waterline all the way to rimming the entire eye with it. You’ve got options to go from natural to dramatic!

1st Look : White Eyeliner
This is the most subtle of ways to wear eyeliner. I apply a white pencil (or you can use a peach or fleshy color for a more natural effect) along the inner waterline of my lower lid.
Make sure to warm it up on the back of your hand by running the tip of the pencil on top of your hand so it glides smoother along your eye. Reason for wearing white here? It brightens up the whites of the eyes and tones down natural redness we all have on the interior of the eye. Therefore making you look more bright eyed and awake!
2nd Look : Liner Along The Upper Lash Line Only
This is pretty simple and straightforward. Take any color liner you want (I just decided on blacks for this tutorial) and start in the inner tear duct area and drawing short little strokes across the upper lash line until reaching the outer corners.
Try to graduate the line making it super thin on the inside and making it thicker as you reach the outside of eye. I like this butter london pencil because it glides on soooo smoothly without having to tug on your lid! It also deposits rich pigment.
3rd Look : Wing It
Been wanting to try the cat eye but too intimidated to use a liquid liner all across your lid? Then just do your normal pencil line on top, but extend that simple line by drawing a sideways triangle shape up towards the temple with a liquid liner and then color in the wing!
Then you can go right over your pencil with the liquid pen to make it deeper and more dramatic and that original line serves as almost a stencil! Easy peasy.
4th Look : All The Way Around
Take your soft eye pencil again and start drawing from the outside of the lower lash line and glide in towards the tear duct graduating the line to thin again. Then, take an angled liner makeup brush and brush along that pencil line to smooth it and make it appear softer. I love doing this trick bc it fakes a smooth line few can achieve just by using a pencil.
There you have it. Four levels of liner that you can build upon!! What level/look do you like best??
