Cinderella : Storytelling Through Makeup

Disney fairytales are the stories that stick in my mind most when growing up and reading as a little girl. I remember those Little Golden Books like it was yesterday and what it felt like to hold them and read them every night.  The story of Cinderella has always been one of my favorites.  I mean it centers around a fantastical glass shoe, turning into a princess by the wave of a magic wand, and good people overcoming mean people – how awesome is that!! So I was ecstatic when I found out they were making a revised “big girl” version of this beloved tale.  Our whole family went to see it the 2nd day it was out and it was just as wonderful as I had hoped it would be. Even my 2 boys, their grandfather, and my hubby went, and everyone loved it!

What struck me most, was how brilliantly the makeup and hair matched the stories of each female character.  Here’s how storytelling was played out perfectly through lipstick and curling irons…

This was the only part of the movie that surprised me.  Does anyone else remember the main character starting out as Ella?  Then the stepsisters tag her with Cinder-ella because of the cinders that end up all over her face as she sleeps by the fire to stay warm.  Anyway, the character of Cinderella is so good hearted, strong, and quietly courageous, I loved her instantly and was rooting for her all the way…obviously.

 How she is conveyed through makeup :  The actress Lily James is a fresh faced beauty with very little makeup color from the start. She has a bitten lip color and flushed cheeks throughout the movie with very little eye makeup.  Long flowing sandy blonde hair with sun kissed highlights that doesn’t seem fussy at all like her step family’s hair does.  Her brows are fuller with a bit of wildness to them, which is refreshingly pretty and gives her a sort of don’t care attitude about looks. This makes it seem as if she truly doesn’t realize how beautiful of a girl she is throughout the story. Even when she gets turned into a beautiful princess by her fairy godmother, (which you can tell she enjoys for the moment) she maintains the good hearted and kind daughter that her mother and father raised her to be. She’s beautiful on the outside as well as the inside.


For that natural flushed cheek and lip look, I would recommend the old school classic Benefit Benetint, Cheek and Lip stain.  There’s no product that compares when this is what you’re going for.   It’s the no makeup makeup look!

Immediately when Helena Bonham Carter turned into the Fairy Godmother, my 4 year old leaned over and said, “She doesn’t look like the RIGHT fairy godmother.”  She was remembering the granny-like full faced bippity boppity boo FG from the original cartoon here!! This was the most revamped main character of them all.  But she was fantastic!!  I couldn’t get over how dreamy, whimsical, and slightly kooky they made Fairy Godmother who had Cinderella’s best interest at heart.

How she is conveyed through makeup : Since she is considered a “fairy” of sorts without the wings,  she needed to be really dreamy.  Her hair had rhinestones in it which made her look like she was glowing!  Her false eyelashes were super dramatic and she batted them constantly when she seemed to get overwhelmed with turning lizards into coachmen!  And her teeth were shining bright and white like a diamond so when she smiled at everything she had created, it showed pure joy and happiness (obviously they gave Helena fake teeth for this, bc they were just too over the top perfect!).  To top it off, her nails were super long like the trendy talons you see Khloe Kardashian wearing, which added to her clumsy kookiness.  Because lets get real, you can’t do anything with nails that long…unless you have a magic wand that is.

For lashes like fairy godmother, I would use fake strip lashes on the top and bottom lash line with Ardell Fashion Lashes in “Wispies.”

Overall, if you haven’t seen the movie, you need to.  It’s truly enchanting to watch and reinvented in the most delicious-eye-catching-fairytale-way that still stays true to the original story you remember growing up.
