Concealer is a totally underrated product in my opinion. If you’re over 21 years of age, it probably wouldn’t hurt to use just a little bit of this product that has magical properties…

The key with concealer, is that it be undetectable. Take minimalist makeup wearer Emily above for example. I found out she doesn’t ever wear concealer and likes to look completely natural on a daily basis. She also wanted to be able to do it quickly since she’s a mom who has little time to spend on her makeup. Once I showed her what a little bit of concealer could do without looking super fake and cakey, she was so impressed!
Here are my best tips for taking the confusion out of finding and applying concealer:
1. Pick the right shade. That feels like I’m asking you to do a physics problem in .5 seconds with no professor around doesn’t it??! I’ll make it simple…
- If you’re under eye circles are more on the brown side in color, pick a peachy shade.
- If they have a blueish red cast (veiny looking) try a concealer with yellow undertones.
- If they’re super dark and almost black-like, you might even need an orange based concealer layered with a more flesh colored concealer on top that matches your original skin color.
2. Choose the right consistency. If your circles aren’t that obvious, you can get away with a thin fluid like consistency. Even the ones that now come with highlighting qualities to diffuse light, like this one I reviewed here work wonders. If you need major coverage or need to cover up blemishes, choose a thicker concealer with a creamy consistency (usually found in pot form).
3. Apply it with a concealer brush to keep from tugging at the thin skin around the eyes. If you’re using a super thick concealer, you might want to warm the product up between your fingers before applying so that it sinks in easier and doesn’t sit on top of the skin. I like to press all of my concealers in rather than swiping the product back and forth.
4. Set it with a light amount of pressed or loose powder. Again, us a press/rolling motion with your powder on top of the concealer for the best amount of coverage and staying power as opposed to using a brush.
Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4, right? Honestly, I would tell women if they HAD to choose between wearing foundation or concealer, I’d go concealer all day long. If you just spot treat the discolored areas with it, it makes a world of difference complexion wise.
