I have been applying minimal amounts of makeup to myself this whole week due to my flooded house being under construction and not having any time to myself in my destroyed bathroom to apply the stuff (too many workers in and out of my bathroom and the rest of my house that I’ve basically shut down the process of getting ready for now-boo hoo.)
But I’m honestly getting sick of looking “sick” because of my minimal makeup time, so I gave into the lure of Cover Girl’s Smoky Shadow Blast stick in purple plume ($8) and decided I would give it a try. It touts being the easy way to achieve a smoky eye, and what I wouldn’t give to have the time to put on a smoky eye at this point!! So this purchase was more for the convenience factor than anything and to make me look like I have bedroom eyes- a la Miss Berrymore above.
I’ve seen the commercials and print ads, and Drew Barrymore just looks gorgeous in the stuff. So I couldn’t go wrong with this all in one smoky eye product right?? WRONG. I will go ahead and give you my grade on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the worst, and I give this stick a 3 out of 10. Here are some pictures of me using this stick step by step (the directions say it’s a two stepper, I added two extra to = 4)
My reasoning behind this low grade:
1. Staying power is terrible. It’s too creamy to stick and stay once applied. You definitely don’t have to tug bc the product is so creamy and smooth which might be the only plus, but that also means it strays with even the slightest eye rub.
2. Color is not that deep and true and takes tons of layering to even get close to a sultry “smoky” eye.
3. Blendability is hard. It was difficult even for me to get the two colors to blend evenly because they were so slippery. Took more work with my finger to blend than it does when I use powders and a brush.
Needless to say, this was a bummer bc the advertising makes it look like this product is going to make my most wanted smoky eye look a breeze. Not so much. After putting this on, I actually ended up wearing my new knit cap I got at Target on sale bc I didn’t love the way my makeup looked and this cap was the best distraction. Next time I want smoky eyes, I’m going all out with the dark powders and liquid liner and NOT taking the easy way out.
